Lewis is the son of J. Watcyn Lewis, (city broker) and Charlotte Mary (née Bowater). The paternal side of his family is Welsh and his maternal grandparents were quite illustrious, his maternal grandfather, Ian Frank Bowater, was Lord Mayor of London. He was raised as an Anglican.

Having made several tours to the United States as a child, Lewis, at the age of sixteen, decided to become an actor. He attended the Ashdown House and Eton College and in 1993, graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Then he worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company as a stage actor where he worked in Adrian Noble’s production of Isben’s Little Eyolf and also in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and in other Isben’s play, Pillars of the Community.

He also once sold car alarms as a telemarketer a work which he hated very much.

Steven Spielberg spotted Lewis in Jonathan Kent’s production and offered him his first big break in the miniseries Band of Brothers

Life
In the NBC drama TV, Life, which began in 2007, Lewis enacts the lead character Detective Charlie Crews, who has just come out of a life term of twelve years from the Pelican Bay State Prison where he was incarcerated for no crime of his own as he was falsely implicated for the murder of his business partner and his family. His lawyer, Constance Griffiths proves his innocence with the assistance of DNA evidence. Though he is free, Charlie has lost his job, family, friends and any sense of time. He is a follower of Zen, an ardent eater of fresh fruits, and has made it his mission to crack the conspiracy hatched against him.
He then takes to the courts, the LAPD as well as the city of Los Angeles, getting his job back and also a huge monetary compensation.

Personal life
In 2001, Lewis’s mother died in a car accident in India. He commented about the situation as: “the single most important thing that’s happened to me in my life.”

He started dating actress Helen McCrory, in 2004, and they married on 4th July, 2007. They have a daughter, Manon (Birth: September, 2006) and a son named Gulliver (Birth: November, 2007).

The family resides in Los Angeles. Lewis is also a die - hard Liverpool club fan.

For Band of Brothers, Lewis won in 2002, the Golden FIPA - TV and Serials: Actor. He also has been once nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
