Weigert belongs of the Jewish heritage. In 1991, she graduated from Brandeis University, and went on to achieve a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University, in the very prestigious acting course at the Tisch School of the Arts. Then she spent around a decade, acting on stage in the New York City, but moved on to Los Angeles, to appear in a variety of TV shows, films etc.
She has appeared on TV shows like: ER (2008), Life (2007), Lost, Judging Amy, NYPD Blue, Without a Trace, Angels in America (2003), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2006), Law & Order, Numb3rs (2006), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Cold Case (4 episodes) and Deadwood (2004).
She also gave some very notable performances in films Like: Things We Lost in the Fire (2007), Loggerheads (2005) and The Good German (2006).
For her widely appreciated role of Calamity Jane in Deadwood, Weigert won Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2004.

The TV show Life
In the detective drama show Life, Weigert portrays the role of the LAPD homicide chief, Lt. /Sgt. Karen Davis, who is also the commanding officer of Dani Reese and Charlie Crews in the first season of the show. She is quite strict, always sticks to the book and quite diligently does her job. She is good friends with Dani and even stands by her side, at the time of her de-addiction programs.
But Davis is clearly not in favor of Crews and did not approve of his joining back the force after a term in prison. Since, she does not like and trusts him; she makes many efforts to get him removed from the police department.
